Question by Ashley S: What could cause a pregnancy test to be negative if you were pregnant?
I’ve heard that if you drink a lot of caffeine and stuff like that can actually make a pregnancy test come back negative when in actuallity you are pregnant. Is that true and is there any other factors in making a positive test negative?

Testing too early, faulty pregnancy test, or a person reading it incorrectly.

Yes, I was almost 3 months pregnant and kept taking tests and they were all negative before I finally went to doctor and had blood test.
There are MANY factors and in my case it was that not enough of the HCG hormone( found in pregnant women) was in my urine. My doctor stated that there are multiple factors such as human error (taking the test wrong or not with your 1st of the morning urine) and manufacturers error.
When you are pregnant, there is a hormone that is present in your body. The tests obviously check for that hormone to be present. In some cases, the hormone can be so low that it doesn’t register. This is typical of testing too early, as this hormone multiplies or grows stronger the farther along you are.
This is the same hormone that doctors check throughout the pregnancy to determine if one may be at risk for a miscarriage. If the count isn’t high enough when you are so far along, there can be trouble.
I’ve never heard of caffeine doing that, although besides testing too early, an error with the test or misread are normally the culprits.
