There are three stages of pregnancy development known as trimesters with each one lasting around 12-13 weeks, and all are distinctly different from one another for you and your baby.
The 1st trimester of pregnancy is predominantly known as the ‘embryonic phase’ and this is really the most critical part of the pregnancy when your body will pull on all of it’s reserves to enable the embryo to undergo rapid and complex organ growth. Within just 12 weeks from conception, just 1 single microscopic cell will have developed into a small human fetus with all major organs in place.
With this enormous feat of human design engineering under way, it is no small wonder that the main side effects for a pregnant woman in these first 12 weeks can include nausea, vomiting and extreme fatigue, among others. This is mainly due to the vast amount of pregnancy hormones that your body is producing such as estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), human placental lactogen (hPL), relaxin and oxytocin, each one having it’s own important role to play in the sustainability, protection and viability of the pregnancy.
The second of your pregnancy trimesters will see things calm down some what as your body begins to become accustomed to being pregnant. Pregnancy hormones that are being produced will level out and all the symptoms of early pregnancy will usually abate themselves. Having a new sense of energy and vitality will give you the opportunity to bloom and begin enjoying your pregnancy before the onset of the enormous weight gain. During this trimester is also when you will feel the early movements of your baby begin.
As for your baby, now that all the major organs are in place, it is now time for them to begin ‘practising’ to use them in preparation for the world outside. Your baby will practice breathing, sucking, hiccuping, muscle flexing and digestion.
