Question by enjoying my newborn: how to make a homemade pregnancy test with household items?
AM CURIOUS!! I keep reading that you CAN’T but that is baloney. I mean how the heck did people back in the day do it? The Egyptians in the 1300′s BC used to pee on barley and it was right 70% of the time.
NO go to the dollar store crap.
no one said anything about INGESTING anything and YES there were pregnancy tests back in the day. Our society wasn’t the ONLY one that was advanced.

Do the rabbit test.
I know the Egyptians used to stick an onion up there, and if their breath smelled of onion then they were pregnant. But I would NOT do that! lol
And I think back in the day they just waited it out. But not sure on that one. But be careful if anyone suggests anything with chemicals. I have heard of some rumors of different cleaners and such, but some can cause a toxic fume not safe for pregnant women…or anyone for that matter!
Sorry I’m not much help! Good luck!
Yes, there were ancient forms of pregnancy tests. So if you’ve got some wheat and barley, go ahead and pee on it. If germination occurs, it could mean you’re pregnant.
Most people, prior to the invention of the chemical pregnancy test in 1928, simply assumed pregnancy if they missed their period and started having all the common signs of pregnancy. If their belly grew and they started feeling kicks, that was their sign that they truly were pregnant.
I’m not sure…but I why try something that could potentially hurt you if you don’t know what you are doing when you can just BUY one?? Seems like it may cost more to do it at home…
are you kidding me? They did not have pregnancy tests thousands of years ago – at least nothing like we have today. The doctor would come and examine you and would be able to tell – usually by checking the cervix, etc.
just thought I might mention that I just googled this idea of homemade pregnacy tests, and came across this on Yahoo answers. I was actually curious too. It’s got nothing to do with the dollar pregnancy test you can get. I just was wondering because with my first two children it took FOREVER for a home pregnacy test to come up positive, and regardless of finacial situtations, who wants to pay extra money for a blood test. And they do cost extra I know because they had to do a blood test with both my children. I’m not so wealthy that I can readily throw away money with no concern. So, I just wanted to say that I thought this was a good question and yeah it sucks that I haven’t found any answers about it. By the way my husband threatened me if I started mixing cleaning products and fumed the house out!!! LoL
This is not a stupid question. I googles it myself just because I didn’t want to go to the store right away and thought it would be fun to experiment prior to actually getting a test to confirm. The problem with all the “nay-sayers” is you have confromed to the modern way of life; you need something you run to the store and buy it…well many other cultures around the world before our modern day did test for pregnancy, they didn’t just wait for a big belly…(whoever made that comment just sounded ignorant) The Egyptians were very modern for their day, they were considered to be very smart (hint’s the pyramids) The store bought pregnancy tests gives results by seeking the HTC hormone levels, so yes many of your household chemicals can give similar results by the interaction of the urine and chemical. For those who think it’s stupid to want to experiment and try to do something on one’s own, always remember, people probably thought Ben Franklin was a fool for flying his kite before discovering electricity, or Alexander Graham Bell for trying to talk to someone a few states away…innovation begins with silly little experiments.
However these are the tests I found:
1. add urine to a cup of bleach…says if it fizzes may be pregnant
2. add urine to Pine Sol and wait about ten mins to see if it changes color may be pregnant
3. fresh dandelion leaves (from the stem) pee on the leaves and if red blisters form on the leaves, may be pregnant
those are just a few I found have fun with those and never let anyone tell you “you can’t do something” this forum makes me want to remind everyone of your 1st grade teacher who always said, “there is no such thing as a stupid question”
Excuse me I meant HCG (but I’m sure you know what I meant)
I agree with Ridgeway. What is wrong with experimenting? I think it’s good to see how we evolved and that is what happened with pregnancy testing too aswell as things like cars and TV’s!
